Case Study - Animation

An animation to promote the release the Independent Commission on the College of the Future’s report: ‘People, productivity and place: a new vision for colleges’.

The project:

When we received the brief to produce a 2-minute animation to promote the Independent Commission on the College of the Future, we immediately decided to adopt a bold but restrained red and white line-based style. We worked with Kyle Prior to develop a look and feel that was consistent with the commission’s existing visual identity while leaving scope for development where it would be possible to produce a range of graphical assets to eventually be used in the final report. We knew we wanted to create a coherent brand for the campaign that would be visually striking and memorable enough so people would recognise the campaign when the final report was released.

We worked with the commissioning team to develop a script in English that could also be adapted into the Welsh language. For the animation itself, we wanted the graphics to flow onto each and feel like a series of evolving diagrams which contribute to the ‘three Ps’ imagery and so, with help from Designed by Ink, we adopted a fluid style that successfully draws the audience in.

Maximising accessibility:

The client specified that they would like the English version of the script to be delivered by a Scottish voiceover so as not to have the organisation appear too London-centric. We also found a voiceover who would be able to deliver the script in Welsh and had to do some re-timing to ensure the animation was synchronised with the Welsh dialogue. Both videos included burnt captions to maximise accessibility for all audiences.

The results:

The animation was shared across social media and had a fantastic response from across the further education sector with over 12,000 views on Twitter within the first week of launching.
